KARPATNAFTOСHIM Ltd. has tightened control over the condition of hydraulic structures and water resources.

Due to the spawning period onset, during which the reproduction of fish stocks occurs, the control over the state of water resources has been strengthened at KARPATNAFTOСHIM Ltd. The company has also introduced a strict regime for the protection of impoundments, because during this period living aquatic organisms (hydrofauna and hydroflora) are especially sensitive to the quality of the aquatic environment. This was reported by the head of production support department Volodymyr Shevchuk.

 – In order to prevent the production activity negative impact on fish breeding, the enterprise constantly monitors the state of sewage networks, pipelines, pumping of unit liquids, storage dams, as well as the quantitative and qualitative composition of sewage discharged into surface reservoirs through rainwater – says Volodymyr. At the Ethylene and Polyethylene Production Plants as well as S-PVC and Caustic Soda Production Plants additional measures have been taken, which exclude the possibility of harmful substances entering the rain sewage network and sewage treatment plants in the amounts exceeding established standards. The technical condition of all pumping pipelines and tanks, in which process substances as well as fuels and lubricants are stored, has been checked. The identified seal failures were quickly eliminated. The same measures have been taken to ensure the reliable operation of sewage networks operated on industrial sites by other enterprises.

The wastewater quality is controlled by the employees of the sanitary lab of the enterprise and we are promptly tacking urgent measures to stop the ingress of possible excess contamination into the sewer network. Enterprises that are service receivers of the KARPATNAFTOСHIM Ltd. treatment plant have been warned about the inadmissibility of excessive discharge of pollutants into the sewer network during the spawning period. For violations committed, we will apply appropriate penalties to be paid for the wastewater treatment.

In addition, during the spawning period the laboratory of analytical control production department has doubled  the frequency of sampling of wastewater quality at the general outlet from the facility for neutralization and treatment of industrial wastewater (NiOPSV).

According to Volodymyr Shevchuk, a number of works were also carried out on the preparation of the reservoir on the Chechva River for the passage of possible spring floods and flash floods, the protection of its hydraulic structures against damage by flood waters. However, it should be noted that the full technical readiness of the reservoir was ensured last year. In particular, one of the four segmental gates of the spillway dam, damaged by the previous flood, was dismantled and a new one was installed.

– This spring, we do not expect any unforeseen situations to occur at the reservoir on the Chechva River due to melting snow, which is already scarce even in the mountains, or through heavy rains, – almost with confidence says Volodymyr. – But the workers who maintain and operate it have taken all measures to reliably prepare this complex of hydraulic structures for the passage of possible floods, including those recommended by the water resources management in the Dniester River basin. In addition, in accordance with our written request, Hydropower LLC has tested and brought to a reliable condition a fish protection device at the point of water intake area from at the reservoir on the Chechva River for the Svarychiv mini hydroelectric power station.
